Rock Band Phoenix Scoring Sofia Coppola’s Film Somewhere

I’m actually starting to like this new Hollywood trend to have rock bands or music groups score big movies. Sure, it’s not new, but it’s really starting to pick up again and there are some great collaborations coming up (like Daft Punk scoring Tron Legacy or Mastodon scoring Jonah Hex). In the same vein, SlashFilm found a story on Prefix Mag yesterday reporting that French rock band Phoenix (famous for the song “1901″) will be writing and recording the soundtrack for Sofia Coppola’s new film Somewhere starring Stephen Dorff and Elle Fanning. Sounds like another awesome collaboration between great musicians and filmmakers.

“It’s very minimal,” said frontman Thomas Mars. “It’s almost like sound design. It wasn’t like writing songs, it was more about trying to make a sound that fits with a Ferrari and the city of Los Angeles’ theme. It was more of an engineer work than a composer.” Interesting quote. Phoenix just won a Grammy last weekend for Best Alternative Music Album. Great to see them trying out their hand at something like this before working on their next album. I’m very excited for Somewhere, even more now knowing that Phoenix is scoring. I just got a feeling this could potentially be on of 2010’s highlights. Stay tuned for more updates on Somewhere.
