Lionsgate’s Saw Series Finally Ending at Saw VII This Year?
Now this is an interesting update, mainly because the quotes are a bit old, but it’s big news we missed. I’m a fan of the Saw series and still attend the midnight of every new one every year, but I admit that its run out of steam, and at this point I’m pretty much done with it. But as always, Lionsgate presses on, and Saw VII is in the works as we speak. When will it ever end? Latino Review published a transcript from an interview conducted on 107.5 Demon FM in the UK (listen here) with Saw VII writer Patrick Melton. It’s a couple months old, but he says some interesting stuff about where this series is headed and how soon it may end.
Here’s what we do know: Saw VII (being directed again by Kevin Greutert) is coming in 3D (first confirmed last July) on October 22nd this year. Last year we reported on a story where Tobin Bell confirmed that Saw VIII (or Saw 8) would be the final film. But since Saw VI didn’t do as well ($28 million), apparently they’re trying to wrap everything up in this one final movie. Here’s what Melton says about their current plans:
“I have a very strong feeling its going to end with Saw VII. That’s something we’re debating now… But frankly because Saw VI hasn’t performed as well as we anticipated, the idea is well why make two movies when we can make one really excellent movie that wraps up as best we can? And it’s going to be in 3-D which sort of adds to the spectacle. So if you had to ask me, I don’t own the franchise, nor do I run the studio, but I have a feeling, a strong feeling that it’s going to be Saw VII which will be also known as Endgame.”
This hasn’t been confirmed by Lionsgate yet, but it sounds like we’re going to finally see the legendary Saw: Endgame this October. Melton says later on, as well, that “at this point everyone is very focused on making Saw VII and seeing if we can make this sort of the grand finale.” Although this interview was recorded about three months ago, it seems like that’s still the direction they’re headed in. Hopefully Lionsgate agreed as well, that way they could work on a script and start shooting early enough to get this done by that October 22nd release date. But how many leftover questions from the Saw series will this Saw: Endgame answer?
“I can’t say anything official yet, but I think the thought around the camp is that let’s solve all questions by the end. Including that question. We wanted to resolve that because it is the 700 pound gorilla in the room… with a vague end in sight as most people have had, its sort of been been pushed off… But it seems that right now the thought is to answer that question and wrap everything up in a wonderful nice package.”
With a pretty bow, too? The question he’s talking about is the ever-so-important question of what ever happened to Dr. Gordon (played by Cary Elwes in the very first Saw). Melton gives a lot of “we’ll certainly find out sooner than later” kind of answers to most of the question that the interviewer asks about, since apparently there are hordes of Saw fans who are dying to have every question answered sooner or later (or they’ll probably go all Saw like on all the creators!). I have to admit that I’d like to see this series wrap up sooner than later, too. Without Jigsaw around anymore it’s kind of lost its touch. And I don’t want to see it in 3-D next either, but oh well. This used to be a great franchise but now it’s time for them to finish it up.
Although I know there aren’t too many Saw fans left (and if there are, they don’t read this site), we’ll still keep you updated on Lionsgate’s plans for Saw VII (and the series). They already got a little territorial and yanked back Greutert after Paramount tried to get him to direct Paranormal Activity 2. Let’s just hope this final Saw: Endgame movie is actually as good as Melton is saying – I don’t want to be let down. Thoughts?
